Okay this image is scary. Trump supporters out-thrusting their right hands to swear support, and none of them apparently aware of how it looks, at all. But it goes farther. Historians believe that the one fatal moment in Hitler's rise to power came in August 1934, after the death of German president Paul von Hindenberg, when a new oath was required of all military men, switching their allegiance from the Constitution to Hitler as fuhrer. It is a classic tactic of tyrants.

There were parallel moments in early 1861, when American citizens who had sworn oaths all their lives to the United States blithely broke them - betraying their country and honor - because their party had lost an election.  This is the Confederacy. Romanticism. And treason to the West.
